Starting from preparation and characterization of colloidal noble metal nanomaterials during his BSc and MSc work, he explored the surface (photo-)chemistry of bifunctional rutile TiO2-based model catalysts in his doctoral studies with special consideration of the impact of defects such as Ti3+ interstitials or oxygen vacancies.
